November 5th, 2018 the 2018 IWF World Championships has been held during 1st – 10th November 2018 at Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. This is the world biggest weightlifting championships for 10 day event. There are 604 athletes, 283 women and 321 men from 88 countries who have been came together in Ashgabat. Everyone will keep an eye on this event, to find out the great lifters in the championships.
The first day of weightlifting competition started with the women’s 45kg bodyweight on 2nd November. SUKCHAROEN Thunya (THA), second at the 2017 World Championships and two times Junior World Champion, won the Snatch with 80kg, the Clean and Jerk with 106kg and the Total with 186kg. Moreover, NANTHAWONG Chiraphan (THA), this year’s Junior World Champion, also claimed three silver medals (76kg, 95kg, 171kg) while DZHUMABAYEVA Yulduz (TKM) finished the third with a Total of 169kg. However, IWF arranged a meeting with the Technical Officials involved due to consecutive mistakes made by the coach and some Technical Officials in the second attempt of Clean and Jerk (104kg), DZHUMABAYEVA Yulduz. As a result, a unanimous decision was taken that the second Clean and Jerk attempt 104kg was accepted as good lift and DZHUMABAYEVA Yulduz received Silver Medal in the Clean and Jerk and in the Total.
On the second Day, there was a tense competition between four lifters, two Thai and two Chinese in the women’s 49kg bodyweight category. TANASAN Sopita (THA), Rio 2016 Olympic Champion and 2017 World Champion, took the lead and secured a Gold Medal setting the new World Record at 93kg. On the other hand, HUO Zhihui (CHN) ended with the same result in the Snatch, but missed one attempt at 92kg. There is another Chinese lifter, JIANG Huihuan, who ended up third, setting a Junior World Record with the third at 92kg. In addition, PRAMONGKHOL Chayuttra (THA) lifted in 120kg in Clean and Jerk and the Chinese lifter came up second in both the Clean and Jerk with the Total (208kg). Therefore, PRAMONGKHOL Chayuttra (THA) set two World Records – to 120kg in the Clean and Jerk and to 209kg in the Total while winning the Gold.
Third Day, Thai lifter took the lead in the 55kg bodyweight category. SRISURAT Sukanya (THA), the 2016 Olympic Champion and two times World second, broke the World Record two times in the Snatch, 103kg and then to 105kg. In the Clean and Jerk, she set the World Record three times and the 127kg and 232kg Total were worthy of Gold. Furthermore, two Chinese lifters followed SRISURAT, having the same Total results, 225kg, but LI Yajun was first to succeed for the Silver, then ZHANG Wanqiong had to settle for Bronze. In addition, LANDOULSI Nouha from Tunisia broke the Junior World Record in the Snatch with 97kg.
Lastly, we came to the women’s 59kg bodyweight category. KUO Hsing-Chun (TPE) won the most, 2 Gold and 1 Silver, also set 4 World Records in this event. The two times World Champion and Rio Olympics Bronze Medallist, successfully lifted 105kg, a new World Record. Then she kept going setting World Records in Clean and Jerk with 132kg and Total with 237kg. However, she had to settle for the Silver because on the second lift, Chinese CHEN Guiming didn’t only overtake her, but claimed her newly set World Record as well, with 133kg. Also, KOHA Rebeca (LAT) won the third with 227kg. Moreover, there are more two lifters: HOANG Thi Duyen (VIE) got the Silver with 103kg and ANDOH Mikiko (JPN) won the Bronze with a 131kg Clean and Jerk. Congratulations to all Medalists!!
