The 2023 IWF World Championships, held in Riyadh, marked a significant event in weightlifting history with a record participation of 719 athletes, leading to an unprecedented schedule of six sessions per day.
Notably, the Championships saw remarkable performances from athletes across various groups, challenging the traditional dominance of the A Group. Weeraphon Wichuma of Thailand made a historic achievement by becoming the first C Group athlete to clinch a world title. This trend continued with three other C Group athletes and eight from the B Group securing medals.
During the 2023 IWF World Championships, the A Group competitions, particularly in the super-heavyweight category, were marked by a series of unanticipated challenges. Notably, the top five contenders in this category were unable to successfully complete their final attempts. The struggle was exemplified by Lasha Talakhadze’s unsuccessful 260kg jerk, underscoring the difficulties even elite athletes faced in this segment.
In the women’s competitions, there were notable deviations from expectations. Key contenders in the heavier weight classes were unable to claim medals, primarily due to technical errors and injuries. This contrasted sharply with the outcomes in the B Group, where two athletes achieved medal positions in the non-Olympic 64kg category. Additionally, Kuo Hsing-Chun, a celebrated Olympic champion from Chinese Taipei competing in the C Group, earned a medal in the 59kg category, further highlighting the unpredictability of the event.
The Championships also featured noteworthy participation from various nations.
Iraq celebrated a landmark moment with Qasim Hasan winning the nation’s first World Championships gold in any sport and Ali Rubaiawi setting a junior world record.
The 2023 IWF World Championships in Riyadh showcased not only athletic excellence but also the exceptional organization and hospitality of the Saudi Arabian hosts. The skill and efficiency of the loaders, often applauded by spectators, significantly contributed to the event’s success. The Asian Weightlifting Federation commends all participants and the Saudi team for an exemplary international sports event.
