From July 4 to 10, 2025, the vibrant city of Astana, Kazakhstan, will host the 2025 Asian Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championships, a prestigious event organized by the Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF). This highly anticipated competition will bring together the most talented young weightlifters from across Asia, showcasing the next generation of strength athletes vying for glory in a range of weight categories. With 27 countries expected to participate, the championships promise to be a thrilling display of skill, determination, and record-breaking performances.

A Historic Event with New Weight Categories

The 2025 Asian Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championships hold special significance as they mark the inaugural global implementation of the new bodyweight categories approved by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), effective from June 1, 2025. These updated categories reflect the AWF’s commitment to aligning with international standards and fostering innovation in the sport. The event will serve as a critical platform for young athletes to make their mark before transitioning to senior competitions.

The championships will feature a total of 189 junior athletes (94 male and 95 female) and 154 youth athletes (79 male and 75 female), competing across a diverse range of weight classes. The weight categories for each group are as follows:

Junior Categories:

Women: 48kg, 53kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 77kg, 86kg, +86kg

Men: 60kg, 65kg, 71kg, 79kg, 88kg, 94kg, 110kg, +110kg

Youth Categories:

Women: 44kg, 48kg, 53kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 77kg, +77kg

Men: 56kg, 60kg, 65kg, 71kg, 79kg, 88kg, 94kg, +94kg


These categories provide an inclusive platform for athletes of all backgrounds, ensuring fierce competition and opportunities for emerging talents to shine.

The Asian Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championships are renowned for being a proving ground for the stars of tomorrow. In addition to the championships, Astana will host the AWF Congress prior to the event, where key decisions regarding the future of Asian weightlifting will be discussed. Topics will include the review of outcomes from the IWF Congress in Manama in December 2024 and the selection of hosts for future continental competitions, such as the 2026 Asian Youth & Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and the 2027 Asian Senior Weightlifting Championships in Jeonju, South Korea.

Fans can look forward to an action-packed week of weightlifting, with daily updates on results and performances available through platforms like Weightlifting House TV. The championships will feature intense battles across all weight categories, with athletes aiming to break records and secure podium finishes. The event’s competitive atmosphere, combined with the opportunity to witness the rise of new talent, makes it a must-watch for weightlifting enthusiasts.The 2024 Asian Youth and Junior Championships in Doha, Qatar, set a high standard, with athletes from Iran, Vietnam, India, and Kazakhstan claiming over 120 medals and setting seven age-group world records. The 2025 edition in Astana is poised to be even more spectacular, with the introduction of new weight categories and the participation of a diverse field of competitors.
