Thailand’s Phuket— After welcoming more than 400 athletes from all over the world, the IWF World Cup—a crucial qualifier for the 2024 Olympics in Paris—came to an end in Phuket, Thailand. Weightlifters had one final opportunity to guarantee their Olympic spots during the competition, which took place from March 31 to April 11. Weightlifting enthusiasts saw an incredible display of skill over the course of the twelve-day competition, especially from Asian athletes who made a lasting impression.
Numerous world records were set during the event, particularly in the women’s divisions, where competitors WON Hyon Sim (PRK), HOU Zhihui (CHN), RI Song Gum (PRK), KANG Hyon Gyong (PRK), and LUO Shifang (CHN) made new world records. In the men’s division, the record books were also rewritten by the likes of LI Fabin (CHN), RI Won Ju (PRK), JUNIANSYAH Rizki (INA), and LIU Huanhua (CHN).

The Robi points, a ranking system based on athletes’ performances in relation to world records, was an interesting aspect of this year’s competition. Four women and two men achieved the maximum 1000 points in this system, highlighting the excepctional results of Asian athletes.
The Thailand Weightlifting Federation deserves recognition for the flawless organization of such a significant and important event.
