As the Olympic flame continues to ignite the aspirations of sporting communities worldwide, the recent deliberations in Mumbai have brought forward jubilant news for the weightlifting family. In the shadows of the iconic skyscrapers of Mumbai, key decisions were sculpted that will shape the athletic landscape for years to come.

Amidst a panorama of discussions at the 141st IOC Session, a significant announcement reverberated through the chambers: Weightlifting has been solidified in the programme of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028.

The Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) has expressed immense gratitude and pride over this announcement. The efforts invested in the upliftment and reformation of the sport have played a pivotal role in cementing weightlifting’s esteemed position on the Olympic platform.

IWF President Mohammed Jalood said: “My first thoughts today are for our global weightlifting community – and especially the athletes – for whom this news will be both a great relief and a cause for rejoicing.

“It is thanks to everyone’s collective efforts that we are here today, and we thank the members of the International Olympic Committee for recognising our unity, commitment to change, and the great strides we are making as a sport.

“Today is a moment for weightlifting to celebrate, but it should not be seen as an end. We must – and will – continue, in line with our strategic priorities, towards a new future for weightlifting as a healthy, modern, and athlete-centred sport.”

AWF President, Mohamed Yousef Al Mana, voiced his sentiments, “This endorsement by the IOC is more than an acknowledgment. It symbolizes the unity, perseverance, and unwavering spirit of our weightlifting community. Our journey has been both challenging and enriching, and this moment signifies the fruits of our collective endeavors.”

AWF General Secretary, Mohammed Ahmed Al Harbi, added his reflections, “Our deepest appreciation goes out to every stakeholder who has played a role in this achievement. The IOC’s decision is a testament to the strength and resilience of weightlifting and the vision of our sport. We are poised for a bright Olympic future, anchored in legacy and aimed at excellence.”

With the foundation laid for Los Angeles 2028, the Asian weightlifting community stands on the brink of another epoch-making Olympic journey, enriched by traditions and fueled by ambitions.
