The Asian Weightlifting Championships continued on Thursday in Gandhinagar, India, with DPR Korea producing a commanding performance across the remaining categories. A total of 12 major international records were set during the day, including six senior world and Asian records and six junior world and Asian records.
Ri Suk led DPR Korea’s success in the women’s 63 kg category, winning gold with a total of 254 kg (111+143). She set new senior world and Asian records in the clean & jerk and total. China’s Yang Liuyue took silver with 251 kg and established junior world and Asian records in the snatch, clean & jerk and total. Fang Lin of China completed the podium with 235 kg.
India’s Nirupama Devi finished fourth overall with 215 kg. Malaysia’s Nur Syazwani lifted 90 kg in the snatch but failed to register a valid clean & jerk, finishing without a total.
DPR Korea claimed another title in the men’s 71 kg, where Ri Won Ju won gold with 351 kg (154+197). His 197 kg clean & jerk and 351 kg total were both senior world and Asian records. China’s Chen Jian finished second with 335 kg, while India’s Ajith Narayana secured bronze with 314 kg.
Uzbekistan’s Khusinboy Matrasulov narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth with 313 kg, only 1 kg behind the bronze medallist. Chen Wang-Heng of Chinese Taipei and Sri Lanka’s Indika Dissanayake recorded successful snatch lifts but failed to post a valid clean & jerk.
The men’s 79 kg category was also won by DPR Korea, with Ri Ryong Hyon taking gold on 364 kg (158+206). He set new senior world and Asian records in the clean & jerk with 206 kg. His compatriot Ri Chong Song won silver with 358 kg, while China’s Lu Naigang claimed bronze with 345 kg.
Uzbekistan’s Abdulaziz Alimjanov finished fourth with 339 kg, followed by Kazakhstan’s Petr Khrebtov on 335 kg. India’s Bedabrat Bharali impressed in the snatch with 151 kg but could not complete a valid clean & jerk. Maldives’ Irufaan Abdulla finished 12th with 175 kg.
