GANDINAGAR, INDIA – On 12 May 2026, the capital of Gujarat officially welcomed the elite of the weightlifting world with a vibrant and prestigious opening ceremony for the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships. The event, held in the presence of distinguished international sports leaders and regional dignitaries, signaled the start of one of the most significant athletic competitions on the continental calendar.

A Convergence of Global and Regional Leadership

The ceremony was graced by a high-level delegation representing both international governing bodies and the host government. Key speakers who delivered welcoming addresses included:

H.E. Mohamed Yousef Al Mana, President of the Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF).

Mr. Mohammed Hasan Jalood, President of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).

H.E. Jayrambhai Chemabhai Gamit, Deputy Sports Minister of Gujarat State, representing the regional government’s commitment to promoting international sporting excellence and the continued development of sport within the region.

Recognition of Organizational Excellence

During the official proceedings, the leadership of the AWF extended their profound appreciation to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for their meticulous preparation and commitment to hosting a premier-standard event. The speeches highlighted the synergy between international standards and Indian hospitality, underscoring the success of the administrative coordination in Gandinagar.

In a traditional gesture of diplomacy and sport-based friendship, the attending sides engaged in a formal exchange of presents and commemorative gifts, reinforcing the bonds between the AWF, the IWF, and the State of Gujarat.

A Celebration of Culture and Athleticism

The ceremony successfully balanced official protocol with a dynamic showcase of local heritage. All participating team members were presented to the audience, representing the diverse and formidable talent pool competing in this year’s championships.

The atmosphere was further elevated by a series of cultural performances.

As the ceremony concluded, the focus shifted to the field of play, where the finest athletes in Asia will compete for continental honors over the coming days. The 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Gandinagar are now officially open, promising a week of record-breaking performances and high-stakes competition.
