José Quiñones of Peru was re-elected as President of the Pan-American Weightlifting Federation. This decision was taken at the Federation’s Congress, convened in Lima, Peru, on January 14, 2024.
Quiñones’ re-election comes following a unanimous decision, as he remained the sole candidate for the presidency. William Peña from Colombia was appointed as the General Secretary of Pan-American federation .
Following the election, the ensuing positions were filled by these distinguished individuals:
President: José Quiñones (PER)
General Secretary: William Peña (COL)
Treasurer: Luis Seijas (VEN)
Vice-Presidents: Nadia Alvarado (MEX), Craig Walker (CAN), Jorge Luis Barcelan (CUB) and Luis Zambrano (ECU)
Members: Paula Aranda (USA), Andrew Callender (BAR) and Jorge España (BOL)
Athlete representative in the EB: Paola Duhart (URU)
The Congress, was attended by numerous dignitaries from weightlifting community. These included Mohammed Jalood, President of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), and Mohammed Alharbi, General Secretary of the Asian Weightlifting Federation along with Mr Eshaq Ebrahim Eshaq, AWF EB member.
AWF General Secretary stated: “The unity and consensus shown in this Congress are a testament to the strength and cohesion of the Pan-American weightlifting community. Our collective vision and unified approach set a solid foundation for advancing the sport’s future. We are committed to working together to foster growth, inclusivity, and excellence in weightlifting across the Americas.”
The Asian Weightlifting Federation President, General Secretary, EB, and all Asian Weighlifting Familly, extended its congratulations to the newly elected officials, expressing optimism for the future of the sport in the Pan-American region. AWF also wishes to extend message of goodwill to the athletes of the Pan-American federation, for their success in the upcoming 2024 Olympics.
